Chapter 6 Web Search Terms

These terms are the principal ones that may be used to track current Internet addresses of sites referenced in this chapter using search engines. Other search terms may be found in the chapter tables that list Web sites and programs for differing purposes.

BLAST and FASTA Source of tools for fast word searches of databases for similar sequences.
BLOCKS and MEME (Multiple EM for Motif Elicitation) Tools for finding common patterns in related sequences and performing database searches for additional sequence with these patterns.
MAST (Motif Alignment and Search Tool) The MAST server searches a protein database for best matches to a set of ungapped motifs or blocks.
NCBI National Center for Biotechnology Information, home of BLAST server and GenBank and source of many useful resources.
Searchlauncher similarity A human genome center with public resources for similarity searches at Baylor College of Medicine.
SSEARCH Database searching using dynamic programming to measure similarity of the query sequence with each database sequence.
